What is Parkscriptions?
Parkscriptions™ is a public health campaign and resource developed by Recreation Northwest to assist Whatcom County healthcare providers and empower the public. The goal of the program is to provide simple resources that have a big impact in connecting more patients with positive outdoor experiences for healthier lifestyles and improved mental and physical health. Parkscriptions is based on national ParkRx programs in place around the country.
Parkscriptions Works for You in 3 Ways:
PARKS
Our online search tool, Whatcom Park Finder, allows you to search 186 parks in
Whatcom Countyand all of the state parks in Washington, and filter your selection by park features and location. Find the park that is just right for your mobility, fitness level and personal needs.
PROVIDERS
Parkscriptions partners with health care providers to prescribe time outside to their patients. The science-backed, proven health benefits of time spent outside include improved memory, lower blood pressure, reduced anxiety, mood elevation, decreased risk of cancer and more. Ask your doctor what park is right for you!
PROGRAMS
Parkscriptions partnered with City of Bellingham Parks and Recreation to create a criteria for Parkscriptions Certified Programs. See the growing list of local programs where you can Get Your Dose of Nature.
Background
In 2015-16, after two years of needs assessment, partner development, and data collection, Recreation Northwest launched our Parkscriptions Pilot Program in Whatcom County.
Our tool, WhatcomParkFinder.org was based on a successful Park Prescriptions platform built in Washington DC— Park Rx America by Dr Robert Zarr and team.
We are currently focusing on the development of educational materials and a comprehensive website of our local parks, providers and programs to serve as the key resource of our campaign.
